What is the Stone Age?

The Stone Age refers to the period in history where humans used stone to make tools and weapons. It began around 2.5 million years ago and lasted until the Bronze Age began.

The Stone Age is split into three periods - the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic.

During the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods, humans were nomadic, meaning they didn’t have any fixed place to live but instead moved around.

Skara Brae is an amazing Neolithic Stone Age village that we can still see today.

Stone Age people did not always live in caves. People lived in huts made from straw, wood and mud. 

Flint was the most widely used stone, used to make tools and weapons such as axes, knives, daggers, arrow heads and scrapers.
