The Uffington White Horse is a 111-meter (360 ft) long prehistoric, abstract chalk hill figure carved into the Oxfordshire Downs, dating back ~3,000 years to the late Bronze Age. Located near Uffington Castle, it is Britain's oldest chalk figure and is managed by the National Trust.

Key details:
  • Design & Location: The stylized horse lies on a steep escarpment, best viewed from the air or across the valley.
  • Creation & Maintenance: It is made of deep, chalk-filled trenches. It requires regular cleaning ("scouring") to prevent it from disappearing.
  • History & Significance: Believed to be a tribal emblem or a depiction of a Celtic goddess (Epona), it has been maintained for thousands of years.
  • Surroundings: Located near Dragon Hill—a natural chalk mound linked to St. George legends—and the iron-age Uffington Castle.
  • Restoration: Recent surveys indicate the horse has shrunk by about 40% over the last 40 years
