Serpent Offering Plaque

This figure of a seated Maya making an offering is a typical scene found at many Mayan sites - mostly dating from around 400 to 600 AD.
   The figure giving the offering is likely to be the Mayan god Yum Kaax, the lord of the forest. He was seen as a protector of hunters and a god of wild animals and plants.
   The presence of the serpent behind the human figure suggests that this image represents a special Mayan ceremony, in which bloody papers were burnt in a sacred bowl. From the bowl the serpent was said to rise up  and from its mouth an ancestor or a god was seen amongst the smoke. By this method ancestors and gods let their wishes be known.
