Two pieces of Tapa Cloth - 20cm x 38cm each. Two designs.

Tapa cloth is a traditional non-woven fabric made by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Islands, including Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga.

  • Production: Tapa is made from the inner bark of trees, most commonly the paper mulberry tree, through a labor-intensive process of soaking and beating the bark into a stiff, flat material.
  • Designs: The cloth is often decorated with intricate geometric patterns and designs, which are painted using natural pigments. The patterns can be symbolic and vary by region.
  • Uses: Traditionally, tapa cloth has been used for clothing, burial shrouds, bed covers, and ceremonial garments. It is also given as a gift at important life events like weddings and funeral
