Vintage Pressed Copper Icon of the Crucifixion.

The detailed composition shows characteristic elements of this specific iconography:

  • Center: The figure of Jesus Christ crucified is the central element. Orthodox depictions often show Christ at peace, having completed his mission, rather than in agony.
  • Flanking Figures:
    • On the viewer's left: the Mother of God (Virgin Mary) and typically Mary Magdalene and another myrrh-bearing woman (often referred to as the Myrrh-bearing women who came to the tomb).
    • On the viewer's right: the Apostle John the Evangelist and a soldier, often identified as the centurion Longinus, who converted at the sight of the crucifixion.
  • Upper Register: The depiction of God Sabaoth (God the Father) in the upper section is a feature found in later icons.
  • Corners: The four evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are often in the corners, each accompanied by their traditional symbols:
    • Matthew: Winged man or angel
    • Mark: Lion
    • Luke: Ox or calf
    • John: Eagle
