A nice example of an African iron currency blade or sword currency from the Congo. Tribal groups have used this form of currency for hundreds of years. Forged from a single piece of iron and engraved while hot, they were used primarily to close trade deals and wedding dowries. Metal currency pre-dated minted coinage in Africa by many centuries. Approx. 60cm long x 22cm wide with a copper covered wooden handle.
