A small wooden replica of a roman shield. 40cm x 28cm including wooden handle.

The Legionary soldiers had curved rectangular shields (Scutum) whereas the Auxiliary soldiers tended to have oval shaped shields. Both types of shields would have had metal bosses, a bulge on the front made out of iron or bronze to protect the hand holding the shield.

They were usually painted red and often decorated with lightning bolts or eagles' wings. The eagle was the symbol of the Roman army, and the lightning bolt was the symbol of the Roman god Jupiter, who was king of the Gods.
